You’ve had your photo shoot and now you’re viewing your photo gallery. You love them but what exactly can or should you do with them? You could just keep them as a digital junk drawer or you could have them made for a beautiful keepsake display. Let’s take a further look into why your photos should be let out of their proverbial cage and how.
We all remember when the 6 CD changer in our car was the popular trend (I hope we all remember or am I old?). Now, the CD player has gone the way of the phonograph and all those CD’s you bought from Columbia House and all those sweet mixes you burned are now collecting dust or being used as table coasters. Well, that’s the way of technology, right? The same can be said for those digital media files you’re now hoarding of those sweet memories of your pregnancy and your babies.
Remember those same CD’s when they would accidentally get scratched or gummed up? You hoped you had one of those scratch fix markers and rubbed away and prayed you could resuscitate it. Despite all hope, that music was a goner and never heard on a road trip again. Accidents happen. Now, even if you transfer your digital photo files to a hard drive, you are still relying on that computer or external to NEVER crash or break. That’s playing a dangerous game of digital Russian roulette with images that can never be retaken.
Our family photos will only become more valuable with time. In years to come, your children or your grandchildren or even further down the line will ask to see family photos. Where will they be found? On a link to an online gallery that no longer exists, a user account on MySpace, a broken USB stick or an obsolete hard drive being used to stabilize that wobbly table? Quality printed photos have stood the test of time and will never be replaced. As a solid example, in my parents’ home hangs a professionally taken/framed picture of my grandparents on their wedding day in 1924. I’ve enjoyed looking at that incredible picture since I was a little girl. It’s been almost a century since it was taken and, as an adult, I can see my grandparents in their prime on such a special day.
Your pictures are truly pieces of art that are invaluable to everyone in your family for many generations to come. 100 years into the future, can your grandchildren look at your portrait on the wall? Can your great grandchildren look lovingly upon those images captured in a beautifully arranged album? There is no replacement or substitute for guaranteed, professional prints that will one day be held by your future family as they tell your story.
Actual failed drives and media cards in my home. One of the external drives in the middle had images from my daughter's birth and the hours, days and weeks thereafter. I spent $495 to have it recovered nearly 8 years ago; I was able to recover about 90% of the images.
